What about potatoes? I used them for river carp fishing some 30 years ago. They were very selectiv.

Spam has always been my favourite. Followed by sweetcorn. I never use maggots or worms for carp because the smaller species always get to them first. As for potato I have no faith in it.

Chickpeas have caught many carp SS, they take on a colour or flavour well during preparation too. I've not had any success with them for barbel and have yet to try for carp but I have had carp on red kidney beans straight from the tin. Any pulse - correctly prepared - will catch with broad beans being a popular bait many moons ago.

Supermarket shelves are full of carp baits and the Polish corner has some great sausages

Prawns, Bread, Corn, Meat, Chum mixer.. Go for off the top or in the Margins. That is what I would do. I am down in Cornwall in August and will be staying at a site near St Austell and will be fishing a similar type of place.
