Bread crumb groundbait - where to get it

Nigel, I bought several kg of brown crumb last year and have lots left, some you're welcome to a bag. Otherwise, trying ebay!

Two years ago I purchased 20kg of white breadcrumbs from ebay. It looked ok but had a *very* chemical odour and didn't smell like bread at all.
I didn't catch very well on it and so binned the whole lot.
I reverted to making my own (which I had always done before that in any case). I buy a loaf of white sliced, let it dry for a few days and then blitz it in the food processor.
It makes enough for one session and I've had a lot of success with it.
Occasionally I'll make up two or three batches and freeze it.

I manage to sneak out four slices of bread at the beginning of the week from a fresh Warburtons Loaf and by the following Saturday the slices are then handed over to 'my leader' who kindly puts them through a coffee bean grinder to produce very fine breadcrumb. I then mix it with water on the day to suit the conditions. Works a treat.

I'm in the buy or use stale and out of date bread group. I blitz it with my hand blender and keep it in the freezer. As an aside, in different sized bags its very useful for filling air gaps in my freezer - a full freezer is a more efficient way to freeze things.

My dad use to collect big bags of stale bread from the bakers, circa 1970's, and one of my jobs was to make it into crumb using an old hand operated meat grinder. And it was absolutely brilliant for tench fishing!

My local tackle shop sells it at a reasonable price, failing that visit a supermarket for out if date bread. If you catch it right it can be 10p a loaf perfect for drying out and putting in the liquidixer

Go to the big supermarkets late on in the day and especially Sunday afternoon they reduce a lot of the bread way down in price. We have got our wholemeal seeded breads, which are not as popular as white, for as little as 17p a loaf. we stick them in the chest freezer along with all the rolls and bits also. They are all in date so good for crumb or the table.
