Hi , I've only just come across this subject. In my experience Plumrose Bacon grill floats and if used on your hook amongst loose fed luncheon meat or sweetcorn it will be well balanced and just of the bottom.

I had some excellent chub from the Blackwater when i was a member of Twyford and adistrict a couple of seasons back. When bites dried up on maggot, and as light faded, i used to put a small piece of crust on the hook, which obviously floated, but id then attach an SSG 1" from the hook so the crust was effectively popped up off the bottom. Several times this gave me a 'last knockings' fish, the biggest of which was a shade over 5lb. I also noticed that the bites were much more pronounced using this popped up crust.

Popped up dead baits (sprats) with a bit of foam or a red sponge ball just a foot off the bottom, often catch pike where the same bait on the bottom fails!

Compressed crust is a great tactic. Take an uncut loaf, one with the square corners (can't remember what they're called; a tin loaf?) and cut the sides off with about two to three inches of bread still attached. Place between grease proof paper and then, on a hard floor, put a few big books on top to compress it down overnight.

The next day, with a bread knife, cut into small hook bait sized squares.

When hooked on an 8 through to 4 hook it stays on very well, like a little hard pellet, but then expands back to fluffiness in the water.

Magic bait for many species, rivers and lakes.
