Do you smoke?? Heavy nicotined fingers will kill worms. Just a thought. If you smoke you might find washing ones hands really well before collecting worms might help. Also if you're pulling them from burrows do so slowly and gently so as not to damage them internally. And have plenty of holes in the lid to allow them to breathe.

Your compost might have something dodgy in it like a feed that affects the worms or the print from the paper. Put them in something natural without possible sources of contamination.Good luck.

The next question is how do you chaps get hold of them, without purchasing them that is.

Do you dig them up in your garden or collect them off the lawn. I never see lobworms on my lawn for some reason, I have heard pouring water on the lawn that contains washing up liquid brings them to the top, again would this work?
Find someone with an allotment who's been growing potatoes. For some reason former potato areas are especially attracrtive to them. May be because the areas get dug over very thoroughly before planting.

I suspect it could be “love”, despite its drawbacks in the rhyming department.

I have kept shop bought ones for 3 months - once. On other occasions they just last a couple of days!

I have used an aquarium with gravel on the bottom shredded newspaper above interlaced with soil, rather than rhodi compost!, or sphagnum moss. You have to be careful not to have it too wet or too dry. Rather too dry than wet and they drown.

I have always kept my lobs in shredded damp newspaper (which needs changing every now and then). The keep very well, increase in size and also get very lively. Moss works well too and you can buy it in a garden centre and that is what I use to carry them in a bait box when fishing.

Like Chris says, damp news paper but the black print not the coloured.after a few days munching through the paper they will become big and tough, just like big Arnie.i didn't know til recently that a worm can't actually drown.
Don’t cast doubt,cast out.
