I actually quite like the natural look. I suppose if you don't scrape/sand the outer coating off, it doesn't need varnish. Therefore it seems logical and a lot easier to leave them plain.

That tapered wooden stopper looks great. A good find. I'll have to get one to replace the cork one the mice got at

Leigh, one can buy very wide corks of various dimensions from online homebrew retailers for just a few pounds.
