Red Deer Fat Line Flotant

Post by Churchill »

I've been experimenting for some time, trying to re-create what our forebears used as line grease.
After much messing around I eventually think I've got it right. Rendered Red Deer Fat on its own is a very hard material, but buoyant. I found that if I blend it with assorted other flotants I can achieve the right consistency

I wrote about the quest -http://anglerangst.blogspot.co.uk/2011/ ... atant.html - with photos

This isn't really a commercial venture, more a way of stinking out the kitchen and learning alchemy. It's nice to use what some of the greats thought was the way to go (see the old quotes on the above blog)......and one of our Silk Line Makers now uses it in the finishing of his superb lines and my fishing buddy, and forum member, MrTrout uses it on his furled leaders
