Keswells......Gone

Do you know of a good traditional fishing tackle shop, past and present.

am going to age myself here- i saw the "old" Woodford shop as the new one!

remember going up to the original shop and Ray running a credit scheme from his notebook-50 p per week for my Mitchell 300s

When the roadworks forced a move- the Woodford shop seemed very modern

wish well them well in the new/new shop and hope they hold on against the internet sheds and now the cheapie supermarkets

Yup, Keswalls took over the Specialist Tackle premises in Collier Row in January, so they've just moved rather than closed. I spoke to the chaps at Christmas and they said it was a combination of the 2013 rent in Woodford being too high and the opportunity to move to a bigger shop with the Specialist Tackle guy retiring at the same time. So it sounds like a good move for them but it's annoying for the likes of me who now don't have a local tackle shop! The nearest one is now the shop at Redbridge Lakes but I've not plucked up the fortitude to use the facilities attached to a muddy puddle.....I may just get my baits and bits online instead.

Interesting to note that the original shop is still empty and still has the Keswalls signage, so the landlord is getting no rent. Maybe he'll rein in his greed next time!

Truth is my main need for my type of fishing is the casters/maggots...ie the stuff you cant send in the post! Keswells were genuine and friendly and not pushy. Shame .Good luck to them though.

Yes

Get their maggots mid week.....Last summer I turned up on a Tuesday and they'd ran out

This is the most old school Aladdin's cave I can think of. Friendly staff, offer cheaper options etc. Go there on the bus. No parking. Short walk from from the Hertford Union canal. River Lea and the Regents canal.

Not Bad ehh....

Last of all of them in inner East London where I live

Perfick! I vaguely remember them - and Bonner Aquatics, now apparently gone - from my days at Queen Mary College.
My son has just been to a Y10 school trip to QM, and likes it - it would be nice if he went there and could be persuaded to bring the ol' man a bit of bait back for the weekend... sonny boy at my Alma Mater and being able to support (albeit minutely) a proper old tackle shop from my past.

Roman Tackle are at the market end of the Roman would not have been there when you were at college Vole, you are probably thinking of Lee,s Tackle. From QMC Mile End Rd turn left into Grove Rd turn right into Roman Rd lee,s on the left well before the market. Used to get my maggot,s there on the way to Vicky park.

It could well have been Lee's, then - I was there from 1971 -1984. When did Roman tackle start, and Lee's (and Bonner) finish?
