Allcocks Aerial Popular line guard?

Post by Fredline »

This is as good a Popular as you will find and the only example I have seen with an all original line guard. Garry Mills told me they were factory fitted but not many. Can you in TFF Land confirm other sightings of this rare bird? Fredline

Fredline, this is the best popular I have ever seen (and I have seen a fair few), I have never seen one with the factory line guard, the only populars with line guards I have seen have been retro fitted wire guards.
You are very lucky to own such a fine reel

I had one for a while, same size with factory fitted line guard. Swapped it for an Altex.
Nowhere near as nice as yours though...

Jeez, that is clean....and the box too. I suppose it must have been a special request as the Popular was supposed to be the 'budget' reel of the range.

I have a few pre-war Allcocks Guides but they give you no information about the options that were on offer, such as all the reel size options and nickel-silver spool rims.

For that matter all the Guides are a bit lax on the Aerial .... post-War they offer the C815 but illustrate it with an old 7950 image!

Hi Mike,
If you are after having a custom built wire line guard fitted to your own reel, you will just need to find a competant engineer.
There are a few guys on the TFF who may answer to your request, I would post a request on here, asking for help with a line guide.
There is also reel maker Gary Mills who could help.

Fredline, that is a lovely popular and with box too.
A 3.5" with factory fitted lineguard sold a couple of weeks ago at Mullocks. I think that was the first popular I'd seen with a line guard, now I've seen two in as many weeks!
