"Sabbath" Walking Stick Pole 19th Century.

Post by Fredline »

I have discovered that this stick was not for a poacher at all but for illicit angling on a Sunday. Any activity apart from church on a Sunday was frowned upon in the 19th century, hence the "Sabbath Stick". A poachers stick of the same format would probably not have had the same quality.

I love that! So much more interesting than a poachers rod.

I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

Nice piece of history :Thumb:

What a lovely thing that is and a nice piece of social history. Sowerbutts made walking stick rods or poles but apparently they never made it into the catalogues, I wonder if it was because of the religious or the illegal view of things.
