Hello;

Thought I would introduce myself. My name is Ralph and I live in Hornchurch in Essex. I was a keen fisherman with vintage tackle until about 20 years ago when life got in the way with children and work. I lost interest when I had to sell a couple of my beloved cane rods to take the family on holiday then my garage was broken into and my remaining rods bar 2 were stolen. I had some modern gear (for the time) and that was cleaned out but the thieves left my old reels alone. I have a 10 feet 6 cane rod from Bromley in Kent but can’t read the makers name plus a hand built rod that is of an indeterminate heritage.

My reels I prize are as follows
Mitchell 300 from the sixties, and a 410 from the seventies.
An ABU 333 from the fifties I think (this was my fathers reel)
A grice and young centrepin which I think is called a coq d’or and a hand made centrepin made for Bromages in the 1970s
A pair of ambidex one plain and one the swan neck type
A pair of 1950s ABU record small multipliers

I am particularly in the market for new rods to replace those sold and stolen.

Favourite type of fishing is small stream and small pond as I prefer intimate venues, always have done. I learnt my craft both coarse and fly on the small streams in Cornwall where my parents had friends who owned a farm near Canworthy Water. The river was wonderful there catching wild brownies up to 12oz on the fly and grayling and dance on the coarse gear. As I got older I travelled further and fished near me the old Lea, Thames and occasionally further afield visiting the Avon and Dorset Stour, and once or twice the Kennet and Lambourne.

Looking forward to wetting my line soon in the traditional style!

Welcome to the Forum Ralph.

The Bromley rod is likely by Dawsons.
Always sad to here of people who've lost tackle to thieves. Good tackle is often advertised here so keep an eye out.
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.
