Post by Black Prince »

Well the advert said b James labled rod bag no ties for eleven foot ish rod right said I and bided for it and won it I am lucky enough to have two avocets in un restored condition but the two rod bags are excellent ones of Ellen’s fair hands (absolutely top class ones) so I thought I would get a b James original one it arrived today very good condition but the ties were gone the label perfect put one of the avocets in it was too short  so what b James Rod would it have come from it is a three piece rod bag 44inches long ImageImageImageImageImage no holes quite happy would have been chuffed if it had have fitted so any one got a bag going spare for a avocet for a swap or may sell for £20 post free (I paid a little bit more) can’t say missus gos on my iPad :Brickwall: nice bag but detective work needed but definitely not for a avocet  if it turns out to be for a b James three piece mk 4 carp rod and I can find the rod to go with it wow  thanks in advance mike

Why not sew the label onto a new bag?

Well I don't think it is for a James Avon Perfection as I have just checked mine and the rod bag is 48 inches long with the top folded over as it should be.

I never thought about sewing it on one of the bags I already had it’s 44 inches the total of the compartment before you turn the flap over so the avocet sticks out 3 inches so the avocet 47inches long so the avocet 11ft 6inches so a b James Rod perhaps 3 sections 10ft 8inches mike

Could it be shrinkage? I have a couple of named rod bags with their rods that are a good inch or so too short. My Hardy Machmaker rod is about 4” too short. Contestant wetting and drying over the years appear to have taken its toll on whatever the cloth was they used.

I think the whole bag has been resewn at some point and also shortened. The sewing looks very untidy and a bit amateurish also the bottom of the bag has been sewn straight across the bottom. Originally it would have been sewn together across the bottom and up one side then turned outside in then the partitions would have been sewn in after.
Perhaps the bag went into hole though wear or rodent damage and then these cut away.
There are three things that improve with age: wine, friendship and water sense, and there's no short cut.
