Welcome from North Worcestershire and from another who has a MKIV SU - if it is a fixed spool reel then I would suggest a Mitchell 300 or if you prefer a centre pin the larger 4 inch diameter Allcocks C815 - both reels being of the appropriate period for the rod.

Welcome Alan; a heavy bruising to the wallet area is, I regret, inevitable. Its got to be a Mitchell 300 hasn't it ? Faults and all..........

Welcome Alan. There are many here with far more knowledge than I but I use a 4.5 inch centrepin for the margins (one without a knurled rim) and a Mitchell 300 for everywhere else.

I would recommend an abu cardinal 66 green and cream for barbel & carp it is a wonderfully smooth reel and looks good on cane, nice drag system also you can pick them up for between £35 and £75 depending on the condition but even the battered ones are still smooth running.
