Quill Floats Stuffed with Cotton Wool

Post by Dom Andrew »

Some time ago I read about stuffing quill floats with cotton wool. I can’t remember where I read about it. :tea:
I believe it was done to make the quill float look more white and solid, though I’m not absolutely sure of the purpose.
Can anyone tell me more about this, or where I can read about it?

Yes I remember reading that. I'll have a look through a few books and try to find it.

There is a small section in Hooked on Floats about cotton wool stuffed floats. They used to put it in the tip section.

Yes .They were and it worked. I have repaired a few with modern cotton wool. Its a very straight forward job working from the tip opened up and resealed before painting.

Like this? The quill to the left of the group has been stuffed in the tip with cotton wool. I think it's more an alternative to painting the float rather than a buoyancy thing. I made a couple but I don't think I've ever used them

I’ve made a few with cotton wool. Great fun but a bit fiddly.

Hope that helps

What a cracking set of floats they are. I may have seen these before - but still very nice to see them again.

Great, thanks everyone. That was really helpful.
Gosh, that book 'Hooked on Floats' is expensive.

Kevin, those floats look really nice and antiquey.
