Pegley Davies rods

Is there a site containing information about Pegley Davies? I can't seem to find much information about them.

No, just bits and bobs picked up over the years on this and other forums.


Set up by two fellers from Surrey ( God's Country ) they eventually joined up with another Surrey firm and had offices in the Hersham Trading Estate.



They imported and made a full range of tackle, I was lucky enough to finally obtain one of their catalogues late last year.


They may have been the first to import Shimano rods, I've recently seen some very thick butted hollow fibre-glass rods by Shimano with PDQ badges on.


At one time it seems the respected split cane builder Robert Kirk built some of their rods for them. 'Bob' Kirk passed away last year.


We did have a member on this forum last year who had varnished their home-built rods for them, but he's been a bit quiet of late.




Being a Surrey lad too, I'd have liked to have collected a bit of their tackle but someone else ( with more money than me ) keeps out-bidding me for it.

Pegley Davies Quality (P.D.Q.) had one of the nicest reps on the road during my 25 years I spent behind the tackle shop counter. None other than the late great Tag Barnes. A lovely man was Tag who always had so much time for everyone.



I'm afraid I am not much up on Pegley Davies rods other than the 'Tag Barnes Special' that we were still selling before carbon hit the scene.

One piece of angling trivia though Pegley Davies were the first company I found with black beads and black tulip beads. Prior to that almost every bead around was red!

In the late 70's early 80's Pegley Davies Quality were quite a big wholesaler. At the time it was Taylor and Johnson, Aitkens, Stead-Fast and Pegley Davies where most of the bits you found in the tackle shops came from.

How things have changed.

When did they stop trading? There's currently a PD Matchstick on eBay, which looks quite a modern rod. I'm after a rod which will take me back to the early eighties

I'm struggling to remember the year as Leeda took over Taylor and Johnson etc etc it made it very difficult for the original wholesalers like Fog, Pegley Davies, and so on. Usual big companies merging and pushing the smaller companies out of it.

I can't answer but would start with a telephone call to David Bardens at Walkers of Trowell 0115 9301816/9307798

It shouldn't be difficult to sort the dates out for when they ceased trading. Perhaps even the A.T.A. (Angling Trade Association) but the call to David is an easy and quick one.

It mentions a sell-out to the EARC, which makes sense...'Bob' Kirk worked for them too!


I'm not sure which miner's strike Roy refers to, there were two...'83 and '85 possibly?. I'd always though they went in the mid-Eighties.

I think it is that fantastic.

I have a dealer box of baits that I was trying to date and 1950's was my gut feeling.

They did a really decent trace wire, less prone to kinking and a bit thinner than the popular cabled Elasicum.
