Before Total Fishing...

Post by Gary Bills »

I have a soft spot for pike, and I thought I'd share an unusual tale, even a slightly amusing tale about Larford Lake, when it was just a reservoir that you could fish on the BAA ticket. These days the lake is known as a hunting ground for Matt Hayes and the Total Fishing cameras, and pike are never mentioned - but gentle fellow piscators - the lake is close to the River Severn and, at least in the Nineties, the Severn would sometimes flood in, and look what you could catch... Makes a change from smallish carp on the method, much as I love carp.
The fish took smelt and was in the big net after a brief but very furious battle. I was only using a light carp rod at the time, so it was hairy...
Apologies for the poor quality of the image - I only bought a digital this year, so this is a photo of an old photo...

The most precious places in the English landscape are those secretive corners,
where you find only elder trees, nettles and dreams. (BB - Denys Watkins-Pitchford).

A River Severn finest, in Larford - enough to give the matchmen nightmares!
