Apoligies, I was not hinting that the 500 was not a quality rod, I have 2 myself and love them, however, personally for 250 id rather buy a MKIV avon.

Re: 500 £250
I've just finished making my own version of an avon rod out of scrap cane with the same specifications of the delux version. All for the price of new cork, glue and varnish!! I could'nt afford the real thing; nevertheless, I'm really looking forward to putting mine to the test! I will post a pic in the thread 'making your own rod' soon!

Ebay is a fickle beast you can get fools with money in their pocket that will buy anything! It also goes to a wider audience the say here, we all know what a 500 is (or should) be worth and prices are realistic. Where as on ebay somebody see APFA thinks arh I fancy a cane rod amtd buy the first one they see usually for an inflated price. If the buyer is happy though doesn't really matter how much they paid.
I have laid aside business, and gone a'fishing.

....I agree! But I found it interesting that my friend with a whole range to choose from feels that the 500 is a better rod than the b james mark iv.Chevin wrote:Apoligies, I was not hinting that the 500 was not a quality rod, I have 2 myself and love them, however, personally for 250 id rather buy a MKIV avon.

Ljm - that looks stunning. Goodness but that is a lovely 500 rod you have built....my admiration and dare I say even just a wee bit of envy here in rain sodden Wiltshire that you have the skill to do that.

Re: 500 £250
I wrote about my 500 recently somewhere else and would advise not to buy from the well known auction site for the following reasons:
1. Quality of this rod is really variable so it would be better to try before you buy.
2. The earlier versions just seem to be better made, with better cane, than the later 500's.
3. They were made to a price by Chapmans and not intended to last as long as they have. So some have really been used and abused in the past, which is hard to tell if 'restored' to look nice and sell, so better to try and find a reliable seller....if you can?
Your intentional use is ideal as, over the years I have found my 500 to be one of the best general Chub rods ever when combined with a suitable 'pin. Look no further than an old Trudex or Record Breaker as they are so reliable.
As ever,.....
