Stonking fish; replying to this thread as of late I have been fishing canals for the first time . Such a huge contrast to overgrown upland rivers for trout and overgrown lowland rivers for chub etc. But as drop shotting is now my second favourite method after fly I spent a lot of last winter perching on a localish canal or two and enjoyed some success. The other day I tried summer drop shotting on the Aire and Calder canal and it was extraordinary- I had at least 100 takes but hit rate low and only about 20 perch with two net jobs. Small fish mainly which peck and tweak the worm and don't stay on but massive fun anyway . I use Des Taylor's walking worm technique with a real dendrobena or lob which I find hugely outfishes artificials.
