A bit more progress made. The Hoop has been removed and cleaned up. The Splice still needs some whipping, just for my peace of mind.
The attachment is laminated oak, very tough stuff. It has taken about a week of drilling, sawing and sanding to get it to this point. The the thread is a 3/8 stainless steel bolt countersunk and glued in place.

Still plenty to do

Well that worked ! and well too.
It has a decidedly pleasing look to it already.
Wish I had thought beyond the normal brasswork !

Absolutely right QC. I also had not got my thought past the brass connection to the hoop but the oak "V" is unusual and really fitting. Excellent MGs. A lot of work. Looking a class piece of traditional kit there. Well worth the effort.

It was a matter of necessity. I wanted to be able to construct the whole thing myself. I don't have the facilities to make a brass spreader, so hardwood seemed the best option. Since I took the pictures, I have thinned down down the arms of the spreader a bit. This has to be done in short bursts, as it is hard work. I have also whipped a couple of sections to cover the splices at the top of the hoop. More to follow, when I get time

A bit of help required. I should have the two bits glued and screwed this week, so that I can begin varnishing.

As I am not going to be drilling the hoop to stitch the net on but binding it, does anyone know what type of cord I will need to spiral wrap the net to the hoop?

I think I may have solved my own question. I have just ordered some green fly line backing. Plenty strong enough and should do the job nicely.

MGs. An off the wall thought but paracord ? Perhaps too heavy though given the finesse of the lovely net you are making there.

I did look at paracord but it all seemed a bit thick.

Glued, screwed and sanded

It now has some varnish on and drying. It will need plenty of coats, so it will be a while before more pictures.

As an aside, having done some research, I think the wood used in the hoop is Ramin. A quick tot up and I think it has cost no more than 10 quid. Made from a few bits and pieces laying around in the garage. The only costs, brass screws, sandpaper and the ramin strips.
