Hello gentlemen,
It was over 25 years ago so I remember the day a bit hazily but the incident very well and it happened as Chris describes in the article.
I peered through a gap in the overhanging vegetation and as my eyes focused on the bottom I saw the barbel and then there was the huge chub
higher up in the water and it was taking some of the maggots that were drifting down. It had the look of an old warrior that fish somehow get when they are ancient. I remember my heart beating when I got bite soon after casting in and that was the barbel of about 6lb and the chub dwarfed that by way of comparison. How big? I think at that time I wrote in my diary that I thought it was 11lb.
Chris told me that it reminded him of the time at Redmire when he saw the giant common and how in its appearance it had dwarfed the other carp that it had joined, including I think the old 38 (Bishop).
What Chris forgot to mention was that about a year or two after this incident that the River Authority electrofished a chub close to 10 lb from the stretch just above.
Best regards
Mem

This link seems to have been replaced by an article about margin fishing for carp. If anyone knows how to replace it, or could repeat the story, I'd love to read it. Stories about 10lb. chub shouldn't just be lost to the Internet graveyard!

If you want an idea just how big a fish like that would be to the eye, watch this recording of Neil Stephen’s 9-5-00 Lea fish. Put something soft under your chin because when you get to 1:02mins in, and you see the fish for the first time, your jaw will drop and hit the floor…

Been targeted and I believe caught before it reached that weight! A huge fish.

Has this link expired? It takes me to an angling times article on stalking carp. Apologies if I’m being cack handed
