I aquired a discontinued old style,but little used Belstaff Waxed jacket a while ago, the wax had dried, so I contacted Belstaff to ask the best way to revitalise it... they recommend NOT to machine wash it at all, but to wipe down with a damp cloth, dry off then reapply waxing agent using either a cloth or a sponge. I followed the instructions on the Belstaff website, and it has come up a treat, like new in fact.

Incidentally, both Belstaff and Barbour do a reproofing and repairing service for their garments... if the jacket is serviceable, or a much loved older /discontinued one as mine is, if it needs a sort out, it must be well worth the effort of sending it away to be "refurbished".

It was a cheap copy, not a proper Belstaff/Barbour... hardly worth sending off....

(Not like the Motorcycle one one I loaned my brother and he sold for a tenner when they were selling for £300 second hand on THAT website)


it's come out all patchy and streaky.... I have some Nikwax, so I shall give it a coating and it'll do for a spare...

The warming up of the jacket after application really helps, I originally used the tumble dryer, not a good move from me with er indoors!

Mine is still drying out after the wash yesterday.... going to give it a spray with the Nikwax as soon as it's fully dry

The older they are, the better they look when rewaxed! The way Barbour do it is to heat the jacket and the wax before applying, so it spreads easily. I redo mine every summer, on one of the hottest days of the year. I leave them in the car with the windows closed for half an hour, to get them nice and warm, then wax away. Hang them up for a couple of days and they are well proofed and look as good as new.

I never washed mine, your not supposed to. It just rotted after about 30 years

I made the mistake of washing my barbour in the bath with a bit of non-bio a few days ago. I'm reassured by the comments here. I was starting to wonder if it was for the bin. There's still a lot of wax left on it so I'm hoping it hasn't removed the protective layer. Purportedly once that's gone the cotton simply absorbs and then secretes the wax through the lining onto your clothes.

Mine came out fairly clean but blotchy.... the nikwax made it waterproof but looked awful... it's been relegated to gardening duty
