I caight my first decent chub of the winter yesterday, unfortunately not by design! I was barbel fishing on the Trent in terrible conditions when the chub below took my maggots:
It was 5lb long, but weighed only 4lb 1oz. One of those strange goggly-eyed chub which I've always assumed to be old warriors. This one, though was in good condition, if a little thin, so is it just a common genetic defect I wonder?

I'm often surprised how little chub weigh for their size. I'm convinced they are hollow!

I've had a few pop-eyed ones myself and always thought they were suffering from hyperthyroidism. :lol:

Just to whet the appetite here are a couple of chub caught earlier this year, by design and on more traditional tackle:
Both over 5lb and both caught trotting bread on a recently restored Aspindales Avon Deluxe. This rod has whole cane butt and middle sections and a split cane tip. A scary combination for catching big chub as it feels like the tip is going to explode at any moment!
