Earlier today I was looking at a Hardy rod (a Sheffield Surestrike) with a serial of G25727. This doesn't seem to fit into this schema. Any one with any idea what it might be?

A few posts back the "G" symbol was explained as - 'mixed material' - split cane and 'another'.

Together with the date number - yours seems to be 1946.

Thanks for this. It is a composite (I forgot about 'G' numbers being those): whole cane 1 and 2 and what appears to be hollow glass 3. For which 1946 seems a bit early. Nevertheless I bought it: £38 for both that and an Allcock 'Light Caster' (viewtopic.php?t=21482), both in good nick, although probably needing a refurb, with straight cane and nice popping ferrules. Which I call a bargain. More details and photos next week after I collect from the auction house.

Greenheart? Having started with fibreglass and, indeed, carried on with fibreglass for all my fishing career, I'm not all that sure I'd know greenheart if I saw it, but it didn't feel like a natural material, very smooth with no irregularities. I did wonder if someone had fitted a later top to the original ferrule after some accident. But all will be revealed next week.

Does anyone out there have the relevant catalogue(s) to quote from?

I had experiences with greenheart early in my angling career - I was given an old rod by a local that was made from that. I found it very brittle and snapped the tip.

Solid glass was next - which you could tie a knot in the top joint!

Exact opposites! As others on here have said - great for smashing nettles!!

I have recently purchased a Hardy The No 2 Allrounder. The seriel number is G30056

The rod is a little over 11' 1" and is built of whole cane (bottom and middle sections) and split cane top section.
I beleave it maybe a 1934 rod. can anyone confirm this?

G30056 is from 1951.

1951 rods with G numbers go from - 28390 to 30595. Data found in "The Classic Fly Rod Forum".

The number for 1934 rods - not with G prefix but starting with E are - 28279 to 31422 - according to "Turners" book.

I’ve just purchased an immaculate, Hardy Wanless 9/10lb rod with a serial number of 22466H costing when originally bought £14. 15s. 11d. according to the Hardy’s “care card” that accompanied it.
It was in a Hardy rod bag that has a stud fastening bottom and top cover, then is closed with a zip. I’ve never seen a rod bag like it.
I noticed, Mark’s rod serial number of H 25743 dates to 1959. Can my rod be dated?

I’ve found the Hardy list of dates My Wanless also appears to be a 1959 work of art.

Does anyone have a Hardy’s rod bag similar to the one my rod came with?
