I have an old Sportex glass rod that I have had since I was a boy. At some point I painted the brown glass with a black paint, which I would like to remove. If I immersed the rod in Dettol as shown (thin tube, up to but not including the handle) do you think it would harm the glass fibres beneath?

You will need an awful lot of Dettol, last glass rod I stripped I used wickes own brand paint stripper, it's not as aggressive as nitromoors but it has very little smell. :Hat:

Welcome aboard Lee! Fantastic tip. My Speedia is looking a bit worse for wear (just like me) so I'll be giving it a go!! Thanks for that.

What a great tip only thing about the dettol is it would remind me of cut grazed and sore knees as a child. Also what a steal of a reel too. Cheapest I have seen.

Great idea!
Has anyone tried the Dettol strip with a Mitchell reel?

We appear to have two threads concerning the same subject running at the same time
After reading the original thread, last Saturday I attempted to strip one of my Speedia's that was looking a bit tatty.
Yes the Dettol did eventually take most of the paint off but it has certainly taken more than 48 hours in fact I have just been finishing the removal today (Friday). I changed the Dettol on two further occasions but even now there are a few tiny spots of paint remaining. The inside of the backplate was the most difficult paint to remove as it was in much better condition than that on the exterior.
What I need to know now, as has already been asked in the second thread is how do I polish the reel to look as good as the one originally shown? Mine has various dark marks all over, is this corrosion or does it polish out with whatever I should be using to polish it.
All advice will be gratefully received

Mike
