Nobby - At Sandown [Carp Society Show] last Sunday I overheard someone telling how a well known tackle company had invented the quick release leads [so making them richer!]. It wasn't my place to tell them that Hardy's were selling 2 versions of 'release' leads prior to the 1930's.
As you say there is little that is new in angling.

This Allcocks 'Automatic release' pike/sea float is probably the pride of my antique float collection - circa 1915:



Prices for early floats really seem to be on the up presently - perhaps not surprising considering how rare and fragile they are,. but the interest and connection to the past outweighs material values for me. Here's a few more old campaigners:



I believe the one on the far left below is a pelican quill - these ceased production around 1935 due to American conservation laws. The 'snake head' in the centre was a cheap eBay find - they're still out there!
