I am interested in the choice of wood for making a reel - do you need to select a particular cut such as quarter sawn timber to prevent warping in the future? Are there some woods which are a better choice than others?

Cheers
Steve
The wood i use is from a antique shelf from oak, completely dry and does not work any more with cold and warmer surroundings. it is also hard enough for a reel back plate i think the wood must be from a good quality to make a back plate from it. Tropical wood is also possible i think but difficult to get here.

I did find some good material for the reel handles i working on, pen making blanks with nice colors, turn them on the lathe and polished them, stil have to make the handles from this but i think that is no problem.

I polished the bars with very fine wet sanding paper and after that with Brasso, the result is wonderful ... i think
