Note there may be the Hardy assemblers initials stamped on the end of the frame. In this instance it is RH. Raymond Humble who worked at Hardy’s 1937-1987

If needed the line level drive gear can be removed by extracting piano wire pin.
Only do this if you have a new length of piano wire to hand as pin will almost certainly get bent when removing. New pin can be cut to length after re-inserting.
On other side of reel remove line level drive spindle/nut.
Remove 2 small screws.
Ease end plate flange out of spool frame evenly to avoid jamming.
Slide out line guard from between helix spindle and guide wires . It is located via 2 end spigots in the frame. Similar spigot locations on the end plate. (Ensure these spigots are all aligned correctly during reassembly or guard will be distorted as crews are done up.)

Remove spool. Note the salt water corrosion on this example and should be a reminder to all to remove line and dry off reel if exposed to salt water. Luckily I was able to re-polish out most of this corrosion to an almost original condition.

If the guide wire slide pin needs to be remove this can be done by undoing it from the frame on the handle side. I did not remove this or the line level drive spindle as both could be cleaned in place.
Reassembly is the reverse of the above taking care to read re-assembly notes where I have included. Oil the various bearings as required as you go.
After cleaning, oiling and polishing you should end up with a beautiful reel

I was surprised that this reel was easier to work with than the Exalta. A great piece of Engineering.
