I'm sure there was a thread on river tench that I read recently, but I cannot find it now. Anyway, I fished The Weaver for the first time this season and caught a pair of very nice, good sized tincas on meat. I was fishing a very shallow bay, completely free of the rivers main flow. It's 3ft at the deepest. Those that read my journal probably know the swim I am talking about. They stormed off like trains in such shallow water.

Very nice. Tricky fish to catch in running water, so a fine result. I bet they went ballistic.

It was mental. I thought they were carp until I saw the green when I got them close in. Great first fish on the Allcocks Aerialite.

That's one of my ambitions - to catch a river tench.

Excellent and in such a wonderful total contrast the the tackle catalogue that arrived on my doorstep today. What you've demonstrated is real fishing, with skill (and some great vintage tackle).

This catalogue is written in a language that I don't understand…

Very nice! I use to catch Tench from the Thames and my son had one to just over 7lb, but since the summer floods of 2007 they have vanished from my area. River Tench fight like little demons so you must be having a jolly time!

Nothing complicated here. Meat on a meat screw, 1/4 oz bomb stopped by a BB, watch for the bobbin to move. Simples.


I've been casting in a new way (for me). I pull line off the pin and let it dangle on the floor. I then flick it out under arm. Is there a name for this type of casting? It seems to work well with bombs, but less well with light floats. I still use loop casting with floats.
