Army Poncho

Not sure if it counts as 'traditional' but when travelling light and roving the rivers,
I'm an enthusiast for the army poncho. Its not only a very good waterproof (that kepps your gear dry as well), but can also be pressed into service as a something to sit on, an unhooking mat or even (with the aid of a length of stout cord) an improvished shelter.
