Not sure if it counts as 'traditional' but when travelling light and roving the rivers,
I'm an enthusiast for the army poncho. Its not only a very good waterproof (that kepps your gear dry as well), but can also be pressed into service as a something to sit on, an unhooking mat or even (with the aid of a length of stout cord) an improvished shelter.

I have a Swiss Alpenflage Camo one, its brilliant for heavy downpours and like you say PB they make a good groundsheet or even a shelter with the aid of a couple of branches and a length of Para cord. As versatile as a Swiss army knife. .

Always been one in the rucksack for years and years......one of the most versatile bits of gear I can think of for all the reasons stated above.

I 've got the US army ripstop version, smashing bit of kit, if you get one of the matching blankets you can even make up a lightweight sleeping bag.
