Had rare visit from brother yesterday who informs me he was given mint condition bit of stick and asked me if I wanted it? :beg:
Hand written "B James and sons" with s/u above. Never been used.
Not much of a poker player so think the jaw gave my 'poker face' transparency.
Consequently he has retracted his generosity and any chance of inclusion into my seasonal greetings card list to boot! But he would like some info please gents?
Sent him picture in this thread and he has informed me its the bottom of the two posted.
To establish if genuine is there things I can get him to check? Length etc
What is S/U mean?
I won't get him to check test curve with his track record. The lad frequently turns rods from 3 to 4 pieces with regularity.
Appreciative in advance.

S/U means 'Stepped Up', as far as I'm aware.

My gratitude Gurn. Had seen post prior to your post. Sent brother Don'tknowmuch's picture from the link. He has clarified identity as bottom rod. Had him out measuring length which he has informed me is about 10 foot. Think he's seeing pound signs the wretched little swine!
Any ideas on value? He was given it for free :notlisterning:

As with all rods, condition is key to value but a half decent one would prob fetch arond £150 on fleabay...Offer him £50 for it. If he got it for nowt, then everyones a winner. :hahaha:

The standard MkIV carp is often listed as 10' 2" but I don't know how that measurement is supposed to be taken, ie with the rod assembled or not.
S/U rods typically fetch less money than the other MkIV's but as noted above, condition is everything.

All of the complete B James MkIV series rods I've seen measure 10' 2" assembled, excluding the rubber button.

Just had another visit from brother. He has generously given me the rod for birthday. Can confirm its 10.2 mark IV s/u mint condition in original bag. just missing screw in button and stopper but I'm sure one of you fine gents will point me in right direction in obtaining them.
Reason for posting is not to gloat but to help answer wife's question....

Rubber button ebay should find one easily. Stoppers sometimes come up on ebay. They vary in price from OK to totally ridiculous. I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the rod.

Stoppers are very hard to come by, for now i'd just whittle something up yourself, but Peter at Oliver's rods has the buttons. He say the larger button is right for the S/U
