Great idea, and beautifully executed too! I may have to attempt something similar. A series of hoops perhaps as my skills probably won't stretch to soldering a cage!

and a much nicer idea than some of those ugly Bickerdyke things you sometimes see shamelessly nailed onto the backs of these lovely reels..

I adore these wooden pins and I own four. I only wish they had shallower spools.

I had the problem with the depth of spool, but I was determined to use the reel, so I got some cork sheeting, I wound this round the spool till I had the required depth, then used one layer of self sticking cork sheet to hold the other cork in place, this meant if I wanted to remove the cork, nothing was actually stuck to the reel. I know some will say "what if the cork slips", but it surprising how good the grip of cork is on wood. I have not had any trouble with bedding in or slipping so far.

Very elegant!
