Bought this yesterday at an antique and vintage fair in Sherborne (Dorset). An Ambidex No'1 Casting Reel. I'm assuming it's not its original paint colour. it runs smoothly and I loaded it with line last night. Does anyone have an idea of the date. Much appreciated and thank you for your time dear members.

One of the Ambidex experts will be along to correct me if I'm wrong but I think that patent was granted October 1944 and a further addition to it was made in January 1947. I'm assuming there's no LTD on the end of the Youngs name which they became at some point in 1947 so that should give you some idea of its age.

Hello Harry. Thank you. It doesn't have LTD on the end. I have been looking on the earlier thread of Ambidex reels posted by Mark and found the patent number that relates to the dates you have mentioned.

Ambidexman is your source here...he wrote the book on JW Youngs...literally! He is Rupe Attwood in real life.

I understand these early ones can be identified by the lack of ribs on the flyer, but the very first of these had a different screw holding the handle on, which had a nut head. So yours, with the normal screw, is early, but not the earliest...which have serial numbers inside too.

The first ones were black, but the bare flyer seems out of place with the paint on yours, so I agree .... it may well have been repainted. Some good reading here:

Thanks for the information Nobby, very interesting. Will be using it on Saturday. Have been reading earlier threads on Ambidexes on the forum.
