Angling Times Spot the Float Competition

During the mid 1960's in the Angling Times they had a weekly competition of Spot The Float. The title is self explanatory. I used some of my hard earned paper round money to enter this competition via a postal order, how times have changed with regards to money transfer. Loads of tiny crosses added to a fishing scene in the hope of winning a Sealey Blue Match and an Ambidex reel, what treasures for a 14 year old schoolkid. Probably a landing and keep net as well. Was I a winner? Was I *@&*. Did anyone else in TFFLand ever waste their money on this early lottery?

I rather suspect that these competitions were run like the Spot the Ball ones - which were a complete con.

I tried spot the float, but it may as well have been 'spot the dog' :Hahaha:

I entered to win a full set of Marks and Marlow floats.... I won a single sheet calendar as a near miss... I got my Sealey Blue Match through honest hard work... I was working for Keswalls as a saturday lad and I helped Ray Wallace and his staff move all the gear to their new (then) shop in Woodford Bridge... as a reward I got my Sealey rod... a jewel of a prize

Never entered Spot the Float. Being a suspicious old cynic even at age 16, I began to smell a rat when the published answer to the previous competition showed the float in one place, but the angler's gaze directed to the other end of the swim!

Entered it once or twice and failed miserably.
On the other hand, one winter evening in Whitby quite a few years ago, myself and SWMBO completed a competition on the back of a beermat and won an all expenses paid holiday to Australia .

It made the spot the float failure a bit more bearable.
