I wonder if Dick fired off a letter of complaint about that advert claim....if he did it may not have been read by Jim Bruce Snr. as Dick still thought his name was B.James!

We have on here image copies of letters showing what Dick thought of Jim's attempt at rod writing. He didn't pull any punches.......

With regard to the length of rods, Dr Cane put me right. I discussed a couple of my Sharpes rods with him, saying that the 9' 3" was over 9' 5" and the 9' 6" was over 9' 8". Apparently the stated length is the length of the blank and that you gain a couple of inches or so with the build. I guess James Bruce went on to claim that extra 2" after a while.
Well you would, wouldn't you?

As stated previously, the cane blank was 10', by the time you added the tip ring, alloy butt cap and button plus the ferrule you now have 10' 2" or thereabouts, it is the same with modern rods, you will also find some old glass and carbon rods that have had a lot of use over the years and developed a loose top joint and had the top joint trimmed and re whipped have lost a bit of length!!!!
