Precautions required with an old Hardy Fly rod?

Hello everyone,

I was fortunate enough to be given a Hardy "The Perfection" Palakona 9' #5 split cane 2-piece fly rod. It is in remarkably good condition and is complete with original bag. It does have a small set in the tip section, but I suspect it will still fish ok. I am fairly certain the rod has not been used for a long time. Accordingly, I would like to tap into the collective expertise of forum members and ask: What attention/precautions (if any) are recommended before using the rod. All the rings and whippings are sound and the ferrule is in good condition. I intend - once this appalling Corona virus crisis is over - to use the rod on the Derbyshire Derwent fly fishing for trout and grayling. However, I would appreciate any advice on how I might bring this rod safely into regular use.

Stay safe everyone.

Regards and thanks, Rob

I don't think you'll need to do anything. Just go ahead and fish.

I have the same rod. I love it. Any idea of the age of yours? I think mine is 1977.

Let us know how you get on (if we're allowed out before the season is over)

Check the rings for rust or grooves or you might destroy a fly line ! If it has agate butt and tip rings, check them for cracks. Use a magnifying glass tiny imperfections are hard to see.

Thanks for the replies Gents. The rod has H60926 stamped into the metal at the bottom of the reel fitting. This might allow the afficionados on here to date the rod? It has maroon silk whippings and a lined agate butt ring and end ring.

You could have a look at the ferrules to make sure they are not cracked or loose. Do that before you cast the rod fot the first time.
It’s a wonderful fly rod! Enjoy it. Bobby
