Breadpaste for the 21st Century

Good evening Anglers,

I was having a think on ways to keep the bait bill down but still catch a mixed bag of fish, (I like to do this in the Cooler months to keep things interesting). This had me thinking about Breadpaste as bait. I have not used it for at least 25 years. The last time being a Hot Summers day in the late 80s/1990. I was fishing a lake called Hogsbrook, near Exmouth in Devon. Just out for a general days angling with a float rod. Not much was going on. Fishing Corn a few knocks and the odd fish. Maggot was "bit city", So, what to do? Off come the Corn and out came the small amount of Bread, "borrowed", from my Mothers kitchen. Moulding small pieces on a 16 hook and casting my waggler to the end of a little island - about 16m out, I went from nothing to a fish every cast! Not huge fish, but quality weight building skimmers with the old proper bigger fish.

So in a nutshell,

1. Anyone still fish bread paste?
2. Anyone had much luck with it in Winter?

River or Stillwater... am not fussy.

I use plain bread paste when fishing a local pond close to the dying reed beds….. in Summer I catch small carp when the reeds are in full growth, , and in Winter I catch Bream. no idea why the difference in seasons but it happens .

I use bread in all its forms.
Paste.
Flake.
Crust.
Plus, mash and crumb for groundbait.

Fantastic bait, very good value for money and it works .

I use paste, punch and flake. I use fresh bread crumb regularly for trotting, mash only rarely.

My brother likes to take a strip of sliced white about and inch wide, cut the crust off, flatten it with his hands, roll it into a tube, squeeze again, cut the tube length he wants and then attach to the hook with a baitband. Sometimes he dips it in various flavourings ……. home made chilli oil being a winter favourite. I’ve seen him catch Carp, Tench, Bream, Crucian plus pick out larger still water Roach and Rudd from the small stuff with it. I started trying last summer and, in some waters it works very nicely! Not tried it on a river yet.

I find punched bread, small, on an 18 or 20 does the biz for winter Stillwater roach.

I used it first time proper in 40 years last summer..Always used Flake before and had no faith it would stay on the hook

It did and was very effective

Issak mentions it back in 1680s

Havent used it in a while but a good bait. Never get round to buying bread early enough to let it go dry first

4 slices of bread blitzed
1 heaped table spoon of salt
2 heaped table spoons of flour
And water to suit consistency

I had instant success!
