The March brown is a mayfly that hatches early on in the season March—may. Their numbers are declining and they are becoming rarer. Even when there is a hatch on the river it doesn’t mean the fish will be taking them. Personally I wouldn’t NOT have one in the box for the “just in case” factor because a big troot coming out of its winter stupor might just come for them for a good early season feed, and what a mistake it would be to not have one of the first hatching mayfly patterns in the fly box.
The brown mayfly (maccaffertium vicarium) is tied on a size 12 hook and the fly is complete with the whip finish behind the hackle on this Clyde style pattern.
Materials:
Dark brown uni 8/0
English partridge feather.
Ginger/furnace hen/cock feather.
Hook standard size 12

Brilliant tying Ian.
Tell me; what gauge wire is the hook you are using? It looks to be a medium wire.

Worry less about who you might offend, and care more about who you might inspire.
