So does anyone know who invented this little gadget for tying spade end hooks?

Good question DC, I have used one for decades and would love to know the answer.

I bet he was a Matchman. :Hahaha:

They were made by 'MPH Associates', if that provides any clue?

In the dim recesses of my fading brain I seem to remember that this was invented in the North West of England in the very late60’s to early 70’ by a local matchman. His name was Terry something or other.

The original device was called the ‘Terry Tyer’ I presume the idea was sold on to a commercial concern later on :Thumb:

Oh by the way, I originally spelt it ‘tier’ as per the OP but then changed it to ‘tyer’ after seeing the advert. Tier ( as in someone who ‘ties’ things together rather than a tier on a wedding cake) seems to be more correct but ‘tyer’ seems more accepted

Sorry I can’t come up with a name but round about 1970 I was on holiday on the Norfolk Broads staying at a fishing guest house called Filby Villa.
Staying there at the same time were three fishermen from Manchester and one of them supposedly was the inventor of the above device.
My father was a user of spade end hooks at the time and was given one of the devices, which he used successfully for many years.
Hopefully this is of some interest.

So we just need the guest list for Filby Villa from 1970!

Keep it up chaps, we are getting there.

Perhaps there was a patent?

The Terry Tyer was I believe originally introduced by Terry Thomas and was the design subsequently used for the Drennan version. the Matchman came along soon after the original Terry Tye but I couldn't get along with it but have used the Drennan style for 50 years.

I have the Drennan version - it must be 50 years old and still going strong.
