Just reading VC Wellington's book, 'The Adventures of a Sporting Angler ' for the second time whilst I recuperate from my recent wild camping expedition to the Western Highlands.

Many of Wellington's fly fishing exploits were in the vicinity of Lochinver and his favourite fly was The Shaggy Whaup. Does anyone on the forum have any idea as to how to tie this fly? What did it look like etc.

Sorry I don't have the answer but I'm intrigued.
Whaup is Scottish for Curlew as far as I can see.
(you might know that anyway)
So could it be a shaggy fly tied with Curlew feathers of some kind?

Yes, it's certainly curlew with possibly a red hackle of some description.

You might have to leave the post running a week or two and see what crops up.... then.
Tye your very own creation.
I am sure it will work because you fish your own fly with conviction.

On another note on the book by Wellington , I've just watched a BBC programme about Scottish lochs and to my amazement it covered quite a few of the locations in the book that I was actually reading about a few house earlier in his book, such as Stack Polly and Loch Broom, and the river Droge. Nice coincidence !

We rented a little cottage on the shores of "little Loch Broom" in 1976., thats a different story.. boat included.
It really is a special place.
I will look out for the program sounds great.

Perhaps it was the name of the ghillie.
