Thoughts? Edit: A stunning dace

Post by Paul F »

My understanding is the dace has a concave anal fin, convex on a chub, a hybrid or a stunning dace?

Hybrid to my eyes….wrong fins, wrong shape, wrong colours….for a true dace

Any ideas what else it could be? He is hiding the anal fin though.

It does look rather like the ones I have had at that size.

His name is Roger Nicholas Mellon - he is a Member of the CSAS and has been quite prominent lately with a variety of specimen fish.

Lovely fish but it does look a little "dodgy".

If that’s a Dace then I’m I filleted kipper.

Seriously though, one issue I’ve learned a huge amount about on TFF is hybrids. The result is, I now tend to take a critical look at anything even slightly unusual that I catch. Sadly, this is a subject on which most anglers remain completely ignorant. That’s understandable but what isn’t is the angling media and prominent anglers pretending ignorance. Just my opinion.

A hybrid of what exactly? Roach x chub have far lower lateral line counts than this fish. I've yet to see a confirmed roach x dace, dace x chub or dace x ide, and this fish doesn't look like an ide.

Colour process in cameras distorts colours.

It's a fantastic dace.

Whatever it's a fine fish. Dace are seriously under-appreciated these days, I feel. :Hat:

Personally I reckon its a hybrid, why is he covering up the anal fin?
