Hello from worcs this is my first post last year l lost a mk lll rod and centrepin reel to a fast taking carp this happened before I could react needless to say l was upset.l now guard against this by looping a cable tie on the rod handle looping another cable tie through the first one and securing round the rear bank stick l wondered if this has happened to any other members. Rod and reel have been replaced

Personally I would not recommend doing this. Sit right next to your rods and all will be well.

Having barbel fished for many years, I have come close to losing valuable kit and know of many less fortunate than I. My tip is to make sure that the butt ring is up against a firm rod rest, bucket or whatever. I also use rear rod rests that grip the butt. My multi-rod carp setup has three Bank Bugs attached. As Jeremy says, it is difficult to imagine this happening with a centerpin, even one with a strong check.

Perhaps a loose coil of line looped around the reel foot ?

Full awareness and control of the line is absolutely essential anywhere carp (or barbel) are present.

Extra precautions like grippy back rests are all very well, but the unfortunate reality is that nothing beats a careful set up and paying attention.

Can’t understand how you lost rod and reel. You must have had it set up without any way for the line to be taken off the reel on the take.

I wonder how big the carp was and if any other angler ever recovered your rod and reel.

Titus l think the line was looped round the reel foot and it was a savage take dragged the rod and reel in at the time l was freelining bread on the surface . Being that the the rod was cane if it ever was retrieved, I doubt it would be usable again after six months immersed in a lake
The moral to this story is l will use grippers and pay more attention in future. Many thanks for replies kind regards titus

Owdo.... I lost a black rod and reel in the same manner at Docklow's Match Pool a few years back.... I wasn't best pleased, but at least it wasn't a cane rod and pin...
