This is the other Nottingham star back reel I own. Written on wooden back inside is the number 17, this could relate to the service history so the reel could be older than 1917.

Only just noticed this as I was messing about trying to post something about Slater latches. That' s a Sheffield **reel, Mark, with a hollowed-out back like that; the check slide-plate with the pin and slot is supposed to be Smith and Wall's hallmark.*

What a great pair of reels!

* [Edit] Somebody said so on ebay, whereafter everybody on ebay says so, so it must be true...

** Sheffield-style, that is, not necessarily made there, but aimed at speed-demon matchmen rather than Trent bagging (sorry) merchants!

I can't see a hallmark on it Vole but it's nice to know the reel style, thank you. :thumb:

Lovely reel that Mark, looks well cared for. :thumb:

There is a book called "Rosewood to Revolution" by John Stephenson which describes the development of the centre pin reel but not many were published and I haven't yet seen one for sale which I could afford  One lives in hope..I would love to learn more about these beautiful reels.

I don't know too much about them to be honest Loop. I purchased this one about 16 years ago from Steven Woolley in Ashbourne. I think then it was £30.00. Hopefully someone else here will be able to advise you Loop.

That looks the same as the one young Peter uses.
