Estimating a pikes weights without scales!

I just managed to bottom out my scales at 20lbs with a pike at the weekend, looking at Fred Bullers chart it could be between 19 and 31 lbs I'm guessing 25lb? Is there a more up to date/scientific way of calculating this, the length was 41 inches, no girth was measured but the pike was quite solid not too slender...

Here's the tale...

A lovely pike! Well done! You are right to think that, as a general rule, a 20lb pike would need to be forty inches or so: but there are many variables, of course. I caught my only 20lb plus pike at this time of year, and it was an impressive young-looking fish that, at the back end of the season would have weighed more; - if I remember correctly, it was a fraction over 40 inches and the weight, by two Avons - 20lb 3oz. I would say your pike was in a similar bracket - still a pike of a lifetime, really! I had a 19lb fish from Dudmaston in November and, by February, a friend had caught the same fish at 23lb 12oz, possibly because of spawn, possibly because it had been feeding up. As I say, lots of variables, depending on the time of year.
