Strange place for a hook-keeper
My "new" Mk4 Carp rod has its hook-keeper mounted on the top of the butt shaft. All rods I've seen have had their hook-keepers mounted on the underside or side of the shaft. Is there a good reason why BJ did this differently?

But what is the thinking behind positioning it there?

Its on the top of my Allcocks New Superb as well, it is either a clever ruse for a better fastening, a mistake during production or a blank that's been turned and refurbished.

I wonder if it's simply because you can see it better rather than fiddling around turning the rod to find it. I know there's not a lot in it. Most fly rods I've seen have them on the side but these are a fixed hoop of wire not a free ring.

Re: Strange place for a hook-keeper
I was wandering a river on Wednesday and carrying a made up rod with the hook slipped in a hook-keeper in the 'usual' place.
The reel being a centrepin with a fairly light ratchet and the balance point of the rod being just above the hook-keeper meant that I was holding the hooklength and the hook jumped out the keeper a dozen times, meaning I had to stop, put everything down , replace the hook, pick everything up again, moan about my aching back and set off once more.
Only for the whole thing to happen again a few minutes later.
I know where the hook-keeper is going on the next stalking rod I refurbish......
Up by the ruddy ferrule!
