Split shot tubs...now I'm happy (well almost)

Post by Swythyn Troutbeck »

I have never felt totally happy with my prior efforts to make split shot tubs out of garden cane. Then just the other day my good lady did a clear-out of her make-up cabinet. While saving in front of the mirror my beady eyes spied some intriguing plastic bamboo tubes in the waste basket...

Closer inspection revealed not plastic, but bamboo tubes!

They were, in fact, discarded lipsticks. In true waste not want not fashion I fished them out immediately and whilst rinsing the last of the lather from my chin it occurred to me that they would make quite delightful split shot tubes.

I scraped them of all residue, washed them out in very hot water and wiped them spotlessly clean. Then I made some waterslide transfers from some beautiful Bernard Venables line illustrations that I have loved since I first saw them in the Newnes Encyclopaedia of Angling, which became my Christmas present in 1965. (I'm sure that my boyhood hero would not mind me pinching them for my personal use).

I finished them off with high gloss varnish and now I'm happy...well almost!

Verry nice, I bet they fit in a tackle box or pocket a treat.

Pocket yes, tackle box no. I ruined one trying to cut it to size for the compartments in my "posh box" so left the rest as they are...an imperfect fit that rattles and rolls about. That's why I say I'm happy...almost.

Ah well, just another solution to "fettle"
