Give Mucilin line grease a try. A couple of yards above the float is enough.

An old technique was to run the side of your nose and behind your ears with your thumb and finger and then run your line between both. Can’t say I’ve ever needed to but apparently the oils will make your line float.

Leeda Fly Float in a spray can - on the line on your spool - every hour or so! Always have a can or three in the box.

I use Drennan Float fish as well

I use Vaseline, usually just on the last twenty feet or so is enough. I clean the line (Maxima) first by reeling in with the line pinched between the knees/trousers.

thanks guys cant seem to get the leeda stuff locally, mucilin is good for the first ten or so feet after the float but on the crystal clear rivers I fish I have to trot 30 to40 yards to get a bite.

I use Stroft GTM and the original Perlon both float well and I have no trouble fishing 30/40 yards + I also do a lot of my river fishing on Norfolk Chalk Streams which like your stretches are clear running.
The Stroft is a very low diameter line per B/S ratio but it does display a mind of its own if one is not attentive & careful when loading the pin.

It’s getting harder to find - some tackle shops may still have some- if you look on the ‘bay’ there are some available - not sure about the B/S - you will have to check.
Failing that the new Kamasan Perlon is very good - well worth a try and is obviously readily available.
