Cheers for that Sean.
I actually already have a quote from John for a MarkIV and all fittings but I have something special in mind so I am sure the price will change, will explain more if the idea bares fruit.

Re: Chapman's rods
So maybe the £300 quid some of the dealers are expecting isn't far off the mark. To finish that blank is going to cost a bit in eyes, tread, varnish and time
Old car owners never die....they just rust away
Re: Chapman's rods
I would imagine it cost £600.00 to complete the rod, which is a very good price for a Top quality modern Cane rod.
And will give a lifetimes pleasure.

That was my thinking and justification behind it Bob, also it is something I will be able to pass down to my son.BobH wrote:I would imagine it cost £600.00 to complete the rod, which is a very good price for a Top quality modern Cane rod.

Re: Chapman's rods
Just a thought.
I had the same email from Dave too, and it occurred to me that a Chapman 500 has straight tapers, whereas a Mark IV has compound tapers. Might that not put the price up further?
Perhaps not with modern computer operated planes( I have no idea if Chapaman use such a thing, mind you), whereas it must add to the labour with hand planing.
All that's left to do from that invoice is whip on a set of rings and varnish, if you do that yourself, it'd cost ...say....another £30?
That's a bit cheaper than £600 JT !
Perhaps you should have a pair?
:hahaha:

Re: Chapman's rods
I have two 500's, one which is as far as i can tell totally original (faded whips) bag 'an all', i also have a totally refurbished user one that ive had carp to 15lb and all manner of other fishies ! i love them, they're a lot more capable than most people give them credit for.

Re: Chapman's rods
I rate 500's as good as mk4 avons, and mr Yates landed 'the Bishop' on one of them. I mainly use mine for bream and roach but the of tench, to 8lbish, causes it no problems and I think high double carp would be as big as I personally would hope to land

I'd draw the line at anything much bigger than this:
It weighed 10lb 14oz and gave me some exciting moments!

To my mind a 10lb barbel out fights most 20lb carp anyway, nice fish though and nice set up :thumb:
