Yep all seems OK since my 6 minutes of "death" [cardiac arrest] possibly caused by hyperthermia fishing a drafty section of unfished mid Thames .
St Peter decided as there wasn't any good chub fishing he sent me back.

Oh my days  well I'm glad your back on the mend Mike,

there's more chub to be caught this coming season and St. Peter has plenty supply of his tiny drennan hooks :Chuckle:

Sounds like you were fishing on one of the privatised AITS being mid Thames,
yes I know only to well how parts of the Thames can be like a wind tunnel as I used to regularly fish the tidal Thames at Barnes around low water and wading right out to nearly what appeared to be mid river :dance2:
trotting for the quality roach and dace that once used to thrive in the river along those parts but sadly those days are long gone, there's still a few roach about but the vast dace shouls are very thin on the ground now :Brickwall:

I used to be in the chub study group for a while and have specialised in fishing the Lea valley for 28 years for its huge chub, have you ever fished the Lea :Hat:

See you at the show on Saturday Mike........and talk more about huge chub

Best fishes

For comparison with your magnificent 8lb'er, my own best-ever chub, weighing 7lb 8oz, (coming from the Thames a few weeks ago), measured 22.75 inches long X 16.75 inches girth.

Despite now coming-up 77 (can you believe that!) have chub-fished quite a lot myself since mid-January; catching three 'sixes' plus the 7-8 on shortish sessions. (Longer sessions being out of the question nowadays.) My usual tactics, however, differing extensively from yours: Good old touch-legering, with a Drennan Bomb Rod, 6lb Specimen Plus mono, 2 swan-shot link, size 6 Raptor, and with cheesepaste as bait.

Perhaps we can get together for a chub fishing trip or two next winter? I'll promise to survive until then........if you will!!!

Besties,

Len.
Sounds good Len :Thumb:

Hope your keeping well aswell,

reminds me I must contact Bob buteux, last time I went upto Clacton to see him I think he'd just recently done the limited edition of recordings / interview at his house with your good self for the company ( River reads ) Tiverton, Devon :Hat:

......blimey is it as long as that , don't time just fly by when your having fun fishing :dancing:

All the best

Stuart

Hello Stuart,

Yes, thank you, am keeping pretty well - well, well enough to do those therapeutic Thameside winter walks!

The Thames at Barnes? That was my stamping ground as a boy. In those days, though, nothing much in the way of aquatic life could survive the gross pollution in that area of the Thames.

My life-long friend, Bob Buteux, is, more's the pity, becoming increasingly frail recently: Walking with the aid of a stick prevents him doing much fishing, although he did manage to join a few of his friends for a social-type day towards the end of the season on his beloved river Lea. I saw him myself a few weeks ago, at the Lands End pub, at Twyford, for the launch of the leather-bound version of the late Chris Haswell's and Mike Starkey's book, 'Carp County'.

Time does, indeed, fly by so very, very rapidly, as I recognise only too well!

Besties,

Len.

Hello Mike,

Yeah! Sounds good to me, too. (Do you realise just how much time has slipped-by since we fished together last?) I have a stretch of the Thames in mind where your chub tactics will probably suit, although it will be interesting whatever the outcome.

Yes, I'm sure we will meet-up soon, probably at the Lands End.

Besties,

Len.

Hi Len,

I'm sorry to here about Bob being so frail , hope he's not in any discomfort,

I used to fish the tidal a lot Len a few years back when it was in its hey day so to speak , fished Barnes by the rail bridge and near small profit dock, leg of mutton near the out let stream, mortlake, strand on the green, Richmond, isleworth, twickenham and teddington but nowadays if anything I'd say you've probably got more chance of catching the bream and carp that have taken up residence down there than getting roach n dace.

It was up on the river Lea where I first met Bob where we were both fishing at kings weir, he'd hooked a very large chub but the fish had snagged him, I came over to help him and I used his land net to carefully flush the chub out into open water where I I was able to land the fish for him, I if my memory serves me Wright it went at about 7lb 4oz and I believe was his first seven pound chub from the Lea :Hat:

I've got the lands end pub on me home page and been waiting for a book launch to come up but didn't see any thing advertised as I would of come up for a chat aswell, I'll have to check the advents more often.

If yer going to the show on Saturday I may see you there, ill be floating around Mikes and Rob maylins bounty hunter and big carp publications stand throughout the day, gonna be a busy day that's for sure :Thumb:

All the best

Hello Mike,

Can't recall actually fishing with you at Long Life, (although I'm almost certain you initially alerted me to its potential), but remember those exciting Savay days very well, so, almost 40 years, eh? Time certainly does fly!

Hello Stuart,

No, will not be at this weekend's show.

Am thinking you might like to see this picture of Bob Buteux, along with Pete Cranstoun & myself, taken at the Lands End at the end of January.

Yes Len, I remember the first day I met CD and during the night caught 3 x 20's whilst he sat and watched me. C phoned you at some god forsaken hour in the morning to see if you would be good enough to come down and take some photos. The rest, as they say ,is history

Take care

Mike
