Bill Rudd’s of Albany Road Peckham.

Post by Mr B »

Good evening,
Dose anyone remember Bill Rudd’s fishing tackle shop in Albany road Peckham?
He made rods to...
a friend of mine still has a rod made by him.
Thank you
Mr B
The close season is an important and interesting time for the Angler who set out to catch big fish. It is a timely opportunity for him to make new tackle or renovate old. There are no end of jobs to do, apart from those horrible things called Gardens!

There is an Albany Road that runs from the Walworth rd to the Old Kent rd.One side of the road would have come under Walworth but the other side would have come under Peckham. I went to school next to it in the 70's. All the old houses & shops got bulldozed to build a massive housing estate one side of the road and a park the other side of the road.
I can remember at the Walworth rd end in the late 70's there was workshops & some shops that were bulldozed & became part of the park.
Some of the streets that became part of the park were in the film The Battle of Britain https://www.reelstreets.com/films/battle-of-britain/ if you look at capture 14 . St George's way runs through the park from Albany Road.
Part of the Surrey Canal also went near Albany Road

In the early 80's they built a fishing lake in the park .
The park is called Burgess park.

I would assume the shop must have gone before the late 70's as a friend at school lived in the last street to be demolished around 1979.
Sorry for waffling on.

A quick Google & found this

I certainly do, I lived off the Walworth road near the Elephant & Castle and Rudd’s was the nearest tackle shop, from memory it was the Old Kent road end of Albany Road, used to get bait and small bits of tackle, that would have been late 1950’s / 1960’s

Funny that,I used to live at the Elephant & Castle before I moved to Essex. Family still live there.
Used to go to the tackle shop shop in Camberwell New Road near At John's School.
Also used to go to the tackle shop that was about 10 shops down from the Thomas A Becket in the Old Kent Road going towards the Elephant, but that would have been in the 70's & 80's.

Thanks for your interesting replies!
Bill Rudd shop was next To Wells way so I’m told ...and how nice you remember it!
I didn’t know the shop 10 doors away from the pub... my old uncle used to box in there..I know the pub well..
Do you remember the name of the tackle shop?

It was just called tackle shop

Have a look around 3.40 minutes

There is an interview with the owner in his shop at 4.20 minutes on the next link. Shop is exactly as I remember it

This brings back memories as the family had a good laugh as the bloke with the glasses on in the pub after the church scene is my cousin

Funny link about boxing.
My grandad and his brother both boxed for Lynn ABC.
His brother boxed in the Olympics and was British champion in 1927 https://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Harr ... 20champion.
