My latest projects Allcocks Popular wide drum and a unknown wooden reel

Post by Evert van der Plas »

Two reels i bough that need a little bit off work
The first one a Allcocks Popular wide drum that i cleaned up with fine steel wool and scotch brite pads and a little polishing with brasso. i cleaned it just enough to keep the old looks on the reel and removed the grey mat layer that is actually the start of oxidation, to remove that layer it get the natural steel look back and to stop on the right moment it looks very natural

The wooden reel i cleaned all the parts polished the brass work and bring back the grain from the wood, when i did see this reel it was possible to see the grain under the old layers varnish and was for me enough to buy the reel and give it a second life
The wood i cleaned with a little paint stripper and fine steel wool, when the wood was clean i gave it a few layers boiled linseed oil, i choose that be course the wood looks better with the oil and satin finish on it. i made a new line guard as well from brass wire 3mm with hammered ends

Very nice Evert. The oil treatment has brought the beauty of the wood out perfectly đź‘Ť

I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

Superb! They look really good, it is amazing what a good old clean up and oiling can do. Nice job.

As always - lovingly and sympathetically done.

Very nicely done Evert :Thumb: The line guard you fabricated looks original to the reel once installed. A question on the Allcocks if I may? I've seen Hardy fly reels polished up to what some optimistically describe as 'spitfire' finish, your Allcocks is similar but better in my eye, do you use a wax or any product as a final protection coat?

No i don,t use wax when i polished a reel, i just keep them the way as they are. it is easier to give them a light polishing job then removing the wax to give it a new shine :-)
