Try Allbern. I’ve seen a couple on the bay of evil over time and there are a few references on other sites.

Albens (different spelling) were a French manufacturer of fishing reels. I think they may have also been distributed by one or more British makers, maybe Allcock.

The first reel listed is a small Tournament Casting Reel that was also manufactured or more likely sold by Alcocks. I have a larger model named Reflex. It has an anti-backlash mechanism that is designed to allow line to leave the reel freely during the cast, but apply a brake when the tension relaxes as the lead hits the water, or ground. That reel is dated mid-1920's.

There are pictures, inc box, of a reel been sold on US ebay.

Looks like Albens also made reels branded for other companies. They were around in 1910 and still selling reels in the 1950's having closed down during the war years.

This one was made for Allcock. Note the Stag's head;



They mainly specialised in trout reels, but also sold direct drive multipliers including one that used an anti-backlash control for tournament casting similar to the centrepin type reel designed for the same purpose. The picture on the box shows an angler using a reel above the rod.

I think the listings for Allbern or Albern are corruptions of Albens. I cannot find anything listed for the first two names on French fishing sales and forums.

Given the ways I see some tackle company names spelt or confused, I find that an entirely credible explanation Clive. My all time favourite so far was a rod listed as being made by Oliver Knebworth! I picked up one bargain named a Milliard!
